The International Yak Association presents the following article only as a quideline for members. We urged you to contact your local ag extension agent to conduct a soil analysis of your grazing land, a nutitional analysis of your dry forage and to acquire a list of known nutritional requirements, deficiencies and toxicities in your area.
Space constraints prevented IYAK from presenting the following it its entirety, but the key points are listed below:
NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF YAK/BOVINE by Lynda Gehring
The 15 essential minerals are: calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chlorine. iodine, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, sulfur, zinc, potassium, cobalt, selenium, and molybdenum.
Salt should be available at all times. It may be fed in the form of granulated or block salt (always provide free access to an abundant supply of drinking water). Check the label on your tubs, blocks or loose mineral to insure that all 15 essential minerals are included. I have chosen to set out a combination of 6 different blocks to insure all the mineral and vitamin needs are met.
1. Iodized salt
2. Mineral salt
3. Cobalt
4. Sulfur
5. 12-12 vitamin/mineral + copper
6. Protein
We also feed loose copper daily at a rate of 1-2 oz per head mixed with 3-way grain. We also feed range cakes/cow cakes daily for an excellent source of protein and minerals. Vitamin A deficiencies may occur when extended drought results in dry bleached pastures or winter feeding on bleached hay with little or no green color.
